Backwoodz newest signee ShrapKnel pairs two long-time friends and frequent collaborators Curly Castro and PremRock. Although the two rappers have long been part of Philly’s Wrecking Crew, ShrapKnel is a pared down affair; sharp knives in tight spaces. There is a full-length album on the way- produced entirely by Backwoodz’ label mates ELUCID & Willie Green- but this EP Cobalt, should suffice for the time being. Beats on Cobalt by Messiah Muzik, Maker, Fresh Kils, Small Pro & ELUCID. Get familiar, as they say.

This album is ridiculously dope and extremely varied. There is all kinds of production littered throughout; I was expecting an overwhelming emphasis on dub, and maybe I can still say that there is but in less overt or obvious ways. This is quality hip hop that is inventive and makes a directed statement. I imagine this music will stand the test of time because of this artist’s iron focus and undeniably idiosyncratic approach to aesthetics. I only want art as focused as this to shape the narrative surrounding my culture. Big ups to Backwoodz. Camryn Marquez
